Wining of Ohio

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

Ever since I was a kid, I can remember my dad with his piles of old dusty green bottles in our basement, just waiting to be filled with some of his homemade wine. Late summer evenings walking down the creaky wooden stairs, I’d be stricken with the pungent scent of fermenting berries or other fruit. The huge 5-gallon glass jars filled with must, slowly bubbled gasses through the strange plastic water-filled traps making an eerie bubbling sound.

I remember when I was in high school, I grinned to myself when my junior year teacher gave us the assignment of making home-made wine. I had the assignment in the bag, and was quite confident in turning in my full 750ml bottle of plum wine. To this day, I still wonder what my teacher ever did with all those bottles of wine, and along those same lines, I wondered how many kids simply filled a generic bottle with something bought in a store.

While out here in Ohio, it was grape picking time at a local orchard, and my dad decided to invite me along for the process.

Between myself and my parents, we ended up picking 11 pecks of grapes. Here’s me with just a portion of our booty:

Next, it was time to de-stem the grapes. Like the picking of the grapes, it wasn’t a quick process, but rather a rather steady even-paced meditative one .

The final process that I helped my dad with, was mashing the grapes into must. Seeing all those grapes, de-stemmed and sitting in a huge bucket, I was so temped to pull a Lucille Ball.

Back in Ohio

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

I’ve been out here visiting my folks for only a day, and already I’ve found some cool things to snap. I thought that this old house and barn in rural Ohio, was the quintessential country building.

Winter Show Listings

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

On my way travels back from Burning Man, I was delighted to receive a notice that NifNaks was accepted into Felt Club’s Holiday XL show in November.

This is very exciting for me, because this is the first show NifNaks has ever traveled a significant distance for. I’m very curious as to what type of experiences this category of craft show will deliver for me. I have no doubt, it will be very interesting and rewarding.

If anyone is counting, this makes five (5!) shows I am doing this holiday season. The first begins with Capsule in October, and ends with Mission Bazaar in December. Click below to discover the where’s and when’s….

Capsule – Oct 20
Plush You – Nov 2
Felt Club XL – Nov 16
Bizarre Bazaar San Francisco – Nov 30
Mission Bazaar Holiday Show – Dec 6 & 7

Please stop by and stroke my cuddly creations!

Tentacled Lock of Love

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

For my partner’s recent birthday, I made a fun-colored U-lock cozy for his bike. When first inspired by this notion, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go for something more anthropomorphic, or abstract for new bike accessory. Luckily, he’s not one of those guys that shirks at the idea of owning something cutesy, so I didn’t have that as a limitating factor. Experimenting with several ideas, I finally decided on the abstract.

One of his favorite sayings is, “I like some cute in my evil”. I feel like this brightly-colored tentacled lock surrounding his bike fits the bill.

Burning Dreads

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

Just thought I’d announce that I’m back from the Nevada desert. I had a whirlwind 36 hours up there with some memorable and epic journeys to boot.

Post return, I found this fantastic photo of Jamie, aka DJ Chiral, donning an intense apocalyptic steampunk look:

If you are a NifNaks wool dread customer, I’d love to see some dusty pictures of your fabulous self in Black Rock City! (I’d love to give you a special gift too!)

Now I need to gear up for the crazy holiday season. Golly, so much to do!

Balsa Man

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

Last week, my partner, Colin, came up with the idea of building a small Man to burn this weekend while everyone was enjoying the "big burn" up in Nevada . It was a fun project Colin and I started a few days ago to throw our extra creativity into, and a great way to pay homage to that event we hold so dear....

Balsa Man ended up being a silly idea that by word-of-mouth gained traction and momentum by many of our friends.... Doesn't it often start off this way? Now I guess it's going to be a much bigger thing than just a couple of Burning Man-orphaned friends gathering on Baker Beach .... folks are even bringing a miniature cathedral (The Temple of Reduced Expectations), and a couple of matchbox cars covered in fun fur (art cars).

If you have any friends staying in the city (but they wish they were going to Burning Man), please feel free to pass on this link about Balsa Man !

Here a stamp, there a stamp

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

Everywhere a stamp, stamp!!!

I’m just pleased as peaches to order a 1” self-inking stamp online. I just got it in and can already see the possibilities: Stamp it on some stationary! Stamp it on receipts! Stamp it on my cat! …Well, maybe not my cat.

Post P4P

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

Just a quick note. Prepare for the Playa was a fun and successful event. I loved checking out the fun fashion shows... especially those done by Five and Diamond . HOT!

Orders are taking slightly longer due to the wool dread rush just before Burning Man . Thanks for your patience, make sure to order dreads before August 16th if you want them before Burning Man.

Prepare yourselves for that Big Dusty Campout

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

Next weekend come visit me at Prepare for the Playa , to shop for Burning Man attire and other hot playa-wear from local small businesses/sole-proprietorships. Two really good reasons to go are:

1.) FREE admission
2.) An AWESOME raffle where you can win tons of cool stuff

Seriously check out the link back to the P4P website , to see the bounty of raffle stuff. Tickets are only $5, and much of the goods are worth far more than that. The event is Sunday, August 17th from 1-10pm. Venue: Cafe Cocomo, SF

I donated a pair of patriotic wool dread falls (seen below). I wasn't actually sure how I felt about the red/white/blue combo as a costume option for myself personally, but now that I see it, I LOVE it and must make some for myself. (I think I'm actually going to install red/white/blue *extensions* for Burning Man, but, you get my gist.;)

Still got Spunk

Posted by Nifer Kilakila in Untagged

I finally captured a video of Cryptic climbing the loft bed ladder. He’s been getting significantly weak with his progressing heart condition, and yet he still manages to bring me oodles of smiles.
