What are NifNaks made of?

NifNaks are made from 100% merino wool, one of the very best and softest wools used in the textile industry.  Merino wool is itch-free for all but those with severe sensitivities or lanolin allergies.

NifNaks are created by felting wool using traditional techniques of wet-felting, needle-felting, or a combination of both techniques.

Felting, what’s that?

Felting is a traditional textile process which is so old, it is difficult to trace its precise origins. Many different cultures have felted wool over the centuries by matting, condensing and pressing animal fibers (like sheep hair) together to form a non-woven material – felt!

Wet-felting involves applying hot water, soap, and agitation to layers of wool. The wool will eventually "felt", interlocking and shrinking to form a durable piece of non-woven material. Needle-felting (also called dry-felting) uses long barbed needles to repeatedly jab at a mass of wool. Slowly the fibers become interwoven to form felt.

Is there anything special I should know about your art in particular?

As each NifNaks product is a one-of-a-kind piece, please expect some slight variation in color and size of each item. However, I stand behind all my products – each NifNaks product meet my high standards for quality and aesthetics. Please contact me if you have specific questions about a product.

I include a Care Sheet with all NifNaks products. If you ever have a serious problem with your NifNak, I may be able to help by scheduling a one-on-one therapy session to repair any damage. Pop me an email and ask me where to send your critter.

All items are handcrafted in a smoke free home.

Where do you get your wool?

NifNaks believes in supporting local and mom & pop businesses – some are local SF shops, and others are family farms on the InterTubes.

How do I take care of soft-wooly NifNaks?

NifNaks are durable yet delicate creatures. The natural fibers will last and last., because wool is resistant to both stains and dirt.

However, remember you are also wearing art, so you might not want to expose your NifNak to extreme distress.

If you find that over time wool your NifNak has become softer and fuzzier then when it first arrived to your home, fear not! NifNaks includes Critter Care Cards with every purchase. Additionally, if you lost the card or simply need a refresher, just ping me and I’ll happily send you instructions on how to tidy up your NifNak.

Always Remember the Golden Rule: Never ever give your critter or other NifNak a warm bath. However, if they do happen to get splashed with rain, never ever throw them in a dryer. Your critter will be very, very angry at you, and it will never be the same again. Trust me.
